A message from Alera Foster for Indigenous Literacy Day 2025:
Thanks to your support, we are lifting adult literacy in Indigenous communities across the country.
I started with Literacy for Life in my hometown, Tennant Creek in 2021.
I saw firsthand the positive impacts a community-led approach can have on students and staff.
While working on the Campaign, I was able to get support from Literacy for Life and members of my community. I valued the support I received from my community a lot because it came from people who I’ve always looked up to.

Because of my lived experience and time working with my community on the literacy Campaign, I’m now in a position to support staff in newer Campaigns, who are just starting off.
I am also more confident to speak up about low literacy in communities. On Wednesday, I will be heading to the Australian Council for Adult Literacy conference in Melbourne to present.
It feels so great to be sharing what we achieved in Tennant Creek in a way that hopefully helps lead to more people having the opportunity to read and write.
Literacy really changes lives. It has certainly changed my life.
Thank you for supporting the work of Literacy for Life Foundation.
And Happy Indigenous Literacy Day!
