A message from Alera Foster, Advocacy Officer, Literacy for Life Foundation

As a Warumungu/Warlpiri woman and mother, I know how important it is for parents to have strong literacy skills.

We are our children’s first teachers.

Take a look at this photo above of proud parents Ashleigh and Lex, taken at their graduation ceremony in Yarrabah, Far North Queensland.

Not only had they completed their literacy training, they’d also just welcomed baby Zelma into the family.

We know that one of the greatest gifts you can give a child is to read to them.

Your support makes that possible. Thank you.

And you can make a donation to help other students like Ashleigh and Lex today.

Ashleigh and Lex in the classroom, with their young one providing plenty of support. Baby Zelma was there too – due in two weeks!

I know from work with my community in Tennant Creek and from listening to our students that returning to education as an adult is hard.

Imagine juggling a young family while studying. Ashleigh was so determined to do the best for her kids that she not only returned to education while she was pregnant, she kept up her learning even after baby Zelma was born.

This is why Literacy for Life’s community-led classes are important for our mob.

Our local staff help break down barriers and do everything they can to help our students achieve their goals.

I’ve personally seen how improving literacy increases confidence, community participation, awareness and understanding and all this combined improves people’s lives.

For Ashleigh, Lex, their children and the community, learning to read and write changes everything and opens up endless opportunities.

This festive season, please consider giving the best gift of all – the gift of literacy.

Make a donation to help reach more First Nations students like Ashleigh and Lex.

Your support has a lasting impact, not only helping students like Ashleigh and Lex, but also lifting entire communities.

NOTE: Do you prefer to use PayPal to make your monthly donation? Unfortunately our donation form does not currently allow monthly donations via PayPal. However, you can still set up a monthly donation using PayPal by visiting PayPal directly.

Literacy for Life Foundation is an Aboriginal organisation that coordinates community-led adult literacy training. The Foundation’s results are at least 30 times better than comparable programs.

We rely on donations from the community as well as funding from governments. The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) First Nations Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
