When the community in Coonamble came together to put on a once in a lifetime performance, ABC's Back Roads team was there to capture this special event.

It was a proud moment for the community to celebrate local talent, culture and resilience.

For Coonamble locals and Literacy for Life Foundation graduates May Welsh and Sonja Sands, it was an opportunity to get on stage and share their moving personal stories.

Sonja is now part of the Literacy for Life Foundation team, supporting literacy students in her own community.

Local elder and ceramicist, Kevin ‘Sooty’ Welsh (pictured above) was also one of the performers. Kevin is involved with the literacy Campaign in Coonamble through his knowledge of traditional art. During Cultural Week, he takes students out on country to learn about scar trees, traditionally created by carving designs and harvesting bark.
